If you’ve just got an ultra-short throw projector and screen, you are probably looking for a cabinet for them but most would cost you a few grand. The AWOL Vision Projector Station was introduced a year ago as an affordable solution designed to house AWOL laser projectors and motorized floor-rising screens. Despite its promise, the station comes with notable advantages and some frustrating shortcomings.
Design and Features
The station is compatible with AWOL Vision projectors such as the LTV-3500 Pro, LTV-3000 Pro, and LTV-2500. This integrated cabinet, available for both 100″ and 120″ screens, offers an elegant classic design for your home theater setup.
The station is made of polyurethane material and painted black. So, it is quite lightweight and durable, while its modular setup eliminates the need for complicated assembly. It comes in a few separated pieces and you can simply place the pieces next to each other and slot in the projector and screen. This streamlined process is a significant advantage compared to other projector cabinets that often require hours of assembly and carry a heftier price tag. Besides, the included detachable soundbar shelf (45×5 inches) offers flexibility for integrating audio components. There is also a compartment on the bottom that I can use for my Blu-ray player.
The station’s key selling point is safety. By elevating the projector and screen off the floor, it minimizes risks from dust or water damage. You can also relocate them easier in case you need to move the setup to another room or house.
Drawbacks
While the AWOL Vision Projector Station is a promising product, it actually has a lot of issues.
Firstly, the station has a rough and sometimes sharp finish. During setup, this made a few cuts on my hand. I use some other products made of polyurethane and they often have a much smoother finish.
Another issue is the AWOL Motorized Screen’s angled plug design does not fit into the station. This forced me to purchase a straight power cord and slightly extend the station. This is a frustrating and unexpected expense for a product marketed as perfectly compatible with AWOL screens.
Finally, the station is intended to position the projector at an optimal throw distance for a proper viewing experience. However, the placement results in a projected image slightly larger than the screen. I contacted AWOL support and they suggested moving the projector forward or using the projector’s “Manual Correction” feature. While this workaround resolves the issue, manual correction degrades picture quality, which is disappointing for a high-end projector system.
Final Thoughts
The AWOL Vision Projector Station has potential but those issues dampen the experience. I tried to return the product but the packaging is already damaged during unpacking, so I couldn’t return it. I don’t recommend the station, especially when it costs around $1,000 at this time.
