Dyson Cool AM06 Bladeless Desk Fan Review

Almost 5 years after introducing the first bladeless table fans, Dyson has just released a new line of Dyson Cool fans, including AM06, AM07 and AM08 for the prices of $299, $399 and $449 respectively.

I got the chance to try the Dyson Cool AM06 since its release on March 6, 2014. This is the successor of Dyson AM01 and it is bringing some notable enhancements, however, it is also priced $100-$150 higher because the old version is on closeout right now. I always love Dyson’s products because its build quality is amazing, I am using the Dyson DC41 Vacuum Cleaner and this is really a monster. Therefore, I expect the same quality on the Dyson fan. Let’s read my review to see if the Dyson AM06 Air Multiplier is worth the upgrade from AM01 or conventional fans.

Design and Features

The Dyson AM06 doesn’t have major changes in design compared to the AM01. Basically, it still contains a fan base and a 10-inch circular loop on top. I assemble the fan in less than 15 seconds as you can watch in the video above, you will just need to align the loop on the base and then twist it. Now you can plug power cord into wall outlet and start using the fan. Notice that it doesn’t come with dual voltage power supply, so you just can use it with the power input of 120V – 60Hz – 0.4A.

My unit is the Black Nikel one and it easily can fit into your apartment’s overall decoration. The fan is made of Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), so we have a soft-touch material on the outside, and it also makes the whole product more lightweight and durable. I have no complaint about the overall look of this fan, it is really a state-of-the-art design that most people will love.

Unlike bladed fans, the AM06 has no spinning blades, so it is safer if you have kids in house, it is easier to clean the fan and also it can provide a smooth stream of wind because the air is not chopped anymore.

Besides, there is a vanishing 2-digit LED display on the front to show current airflow settings. Dyson is trying to make the design cleaner by putting control buttons away from the fan. As you can see, there is only the Power button on the fan base. Other controls are now on a remote control, you can turn on/off the fan, oscillation, adjust wind level and set sleep timer using the remote control. This is a nice improvement but also a disadvantage because you won’t be able to control the fan if you lose the remote control. I recommend you to place the control on top of the fan after using it, there is a hidden magnet on top to securely hold the control.

The fan base can also be tilted back and forth to adjust air direction up and down. Therefore, along with the 90-degree oscillation, you can direct the airflow anywhere in your room.

We can see that the changes in design are insignificant. The real improvements lie in its engine. The mechanism is almost the same, air is drawn from grille around the base through a brushless motor, then it is accelerated and blown through an annular aperture, it also draws in surrounding air to amplify the airflow. Though testing, the airflow is about 18% stronger than its predecessor AM01. However, the airflow is not distributed equally across the loop, I can feel it is very strong on top, weaker on 2 sides and bottom and there is almost no wind at the center.

I also notice that the AM06 is much quieter than other desk fans, and also the AM01. Dyson said it is 75% quieter than the AM01 thanks to the streamlined air channels and Helmholtz cavity to reduce noise and vibration. There are 10 airflow settings and at maximum level, it is still quieter than most conventional desk fans.

Another notable improvement is its energy efficiency. The AM06 uses less energy to propel the airflow, the motor can run slower to produce the same powerful airflow, therefore, it could save up to 30% of energy compared to the AM01.

Overall, I think the Dyson AM06 is an excellent product for most modern house. Once you use the bladeless fan, you will feel difficult to return to loud conventional desk fans again. This is a beautiful fan that could be a great complement for your interior as well. The only barrier is the high price, the Dyson AM06 is available on Amazon for $299 in 3 colors, Black Nikel, Iron Blue and White Silver. If you can overcome the price, you will never regret it.
