The EPOMAKER TH80 PRO V2 VIA is an impressive 79-key hot-swappable mechanical keyboard that combines a compact design with versatile features. As compared to the first version that we tested last year, the V2 comes with some notable changes and upgrades.
Design & Layout
The 75% layout retains essential keys like the function row and arrow keys while eliminating the numeric pad, making it perfect for those needing more desk space or a more portable option.
This keyboard features tri-mode connectivity, offering USB-C, 2.4GHz wireless, and Bluetooth 5.0 connections. This flexibility allows seamless switching between devices, including computers, tablets, and smartphones. Additionally, the keyboard supports both Windows and Mac layouts.
One of the key highlights is its hot-swappable capability, allowing users to change the 3 or 5-pin cherry-style mechanical switches without soldering. This feature enables a highly customizable typing experience. The review unit came with Mulan linear switches, which provide a smooth and fast actuation, making it ideal for gaming. If you type more and prefer tactile feedback, you should go with other switches like the Budgerigar.
The keyboard’s build quality is good although the frame is made of ABS plastic with a slightly metallic finish. The keycaps are made from durable PBT plastic with dye-sublimated legends, ensuring they won’t fade over time. The keycaps offer a comfortable typing experience with their taller and slightly concave design.
A unique addition to the TH80 Pro V2 is its 1.17-inch screen, capable of displaying basic information like time, date, and connection mode. Users can also upload custom static images or GIF animations, adding a personalized touch to the keyboard. Unfortunately, the EPOMAKER Image Custom Tool is not available for macOS, therefore, I’m stuck with a black screen with wrong date and time.
Performance
Performance-wise, the TH80 Pro V2 delivers an exceptional typing experience right out of the box. The pre-lubed switches and stabilizers contribute to a satisfying smooth feedback. Inside the keyboard, multiple layers of foam and silicone enhance the acoustic and tactile experience, providing a soft and poppy sound signature. The gasket-mounted design further improves typing comfort by adding flexibility and cushioning to each keystroke.
Programming the keyboard is straightforward with the VIA software, an open-source tool that allows for key remapping, macro assignments, and creating multiple key layers. Although the initial setup requires downloading an extra file, the software is user-friendly and offers extensive customization options typically found in more expensive custom keyboards.
