     Yes, the SIM-free model will probably come out in October. I haven’t seen any other iPhone 7 model at the moment.

       AT&T and T-Mobile are both GSM, but generally operate on different bands, though there is some overlap between them. Apple’s GSM iPhone 7 and 7 Plus simply include the ability to operate in full on both carriers, rather than limiting them to specific bands because your SIM card determines the carrier, as long as the phone has the hardware (which in your case, it does).

     You can use the Verizon phone on AT&T as it’s unlocked out of the box.

       What’s the difference between Verizon phone and sim-free version? Both are A1661(for 7 plus)?

       I’m currently on AT&T but want to be able to use it for any carrier all over the world (especially China).

       Looks like some people cannot get the Verizon version from Apple Store without a Verizon account but some people can, store policy? And if I can get Verizon sealed phone from apple store, is there any special thing I need to pay attention to during the activation?

   If I want an iPhone 7 that works on all USA networks and has the best antennas for international travel, do I want the CDMA or GSM iPhone 7?

   Both look like they offer the same antennas and cross network compatibility. So should
   I get the the Verizon or AT&T iPhone 7?

   I always pay full price for unlocked devices.

     Yes you should get the Verizon phone. It works on all networks in the US and even on China Mobile.

       Sadly they won’t sell the Verizon iPhone 7 unless you already have a Verizon Wireless account – which I do not, as I always go prepaid. So I can’t buy the phone!

       That’s what I thought. But when I try to buy the Verizon iPhone 7 it asks for account information to validate I am a customer – which I am not as I use prepaid in the USA. So I can’t buy the phone :-(

     All those models work well in Mexico, just make sure to buy the unlocked phone.

   I’m curious as Len is. Right now, the model A1660 seems compatible will all US LTE networks except AT&T and T-Mobile. I currently use AT&T on an iPhone 6 model A1586. The A1586 has compatibility with many LTE bands, but also includes ALL the bands listed for the A1549.

   I am hoping that Apple comes out with a truly unlocked version that covers ALL bands, otherwise it appears that the A1778 is essentially locked to AT&T and T-Mobile, and those users won’t be able to use carriers such as Verizon or Sprint.

   Thoughts anyone?

     At the moment, you can buy the Verizon phone as it is unlocked and compatible with all networks. Or you can wait for the sim-free version.

       Hi Tuan,

       Wouldn’t the Verizon phone be the Model A1660? I’m concerned as the A1660 doesn’t show LTE compatibility for AT&T according to the Apple LTE chart: http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/

       In the past they had one model that covered ALL the bands. I’ve read that the sim-free version is available world wide today but not in the U.S. Maybe that model will be similar to the 6S Model A1633 and the 6 Model A1586?

       Don’t worry.
       I use Verizon phones on AT&T and T-Mobile all the time. The sim-free version is the same A1660.

    Hi Sir , I am Riju , from India. I am planing to buy an iPhone 7 from USA , because my relative is there and he is ready to pay for it. But , as it costs 649 $ and applicable sales taxes , I am telling him to enroll in the iPhone Upgrade Program and buy one for me. So , my question is , will I be able to use it in India , while he pays the monthly amount ? Can I activate the iPhone in India with an Indian sim card ? Or should my relative activate it in USA with a sim card there ? Again , which model I should choose if he buy it now ? Should I wait for the Sim-free version ? Then , which model I get ? What is the difference between “iPhone Upgrade Program” and “iPhone Installment Plan” ? Please help me to overcome this doubt :)

      Hi,
      You just need to activate the phone in the US and it will be unlocked. Any of those models will work well in India.

        And , when finishing one of the last steps of pre-order , it says “iPhone 7 connected with Sprint”. What this means ? I do not want to upgrade every year and I do not need the Apple Care Plan , because the phone will be in India forever. So , I am planning to go for the “iPhone Installment Plan”. In that , there is no annual upgrade and Apple Care Plan. So , the monthly amount is less. Above all , I need an Unlocked iPhone 7 , which is free to use in anywhere outside USA , even after activating it in USA first.         Now , I am aware of the different model numbers. But , I need to know 2 main things basically. First is , when I preorder an “iPhone connected to Sprint” , it says it is unlocked. Then , why is it connected to Sprint ? What are the procedures to activate that same device and use it forever in India ? Second is , in the preorder , there are different payment options. I selected “iPhone Installment Plan” , because , I don’t want to upgrade the device anyway , as in the “iPhone Upgrade Program”. So , should my relative trade in or trade up his current iPhone to avail the “IPhone Installment Plan” benefit ? Please help to clear all these. After that only , I can place an order during the preorder period and he can pickup the iPhone from the store. Thank You !

      It’s unlocked as long as you buy it at Apple Store. I buy iPhones there all the time and use them in all countries I visit. I even didn’t need to activate the phones in the US.

        You need to buy iPhone 7 A1778 or iPhone 7 Plus A1784.
        They will work in Japan and in Brazil.
        Warranty from Apple in Brazil , only models A1778 and A1784. (Anatel)

    Two questions: 1. The so called CDMA versions will take nano-SIMS, correct? 2. Isn’t the Japanese one the best one to get for global use? I am European (have Belgian SIM), live in China (have China SIM) and work for US company (have ATT SIM) and love travelling to Japan (no SIM)…. should I / will I be able to get a Japanese 7 Plus 1785 and use everywhere? Or should I get a Chinese one here in local Apple store?

      Apple has limited warranty that restricts to the same country from where the phone was purchased. So you should buy the phone in India to eligible for Indian warranty.

        No, Apple has limited warranty to the phone that has the national agency homologation.
        It does not matter the country from where the iPhone had been purchased.
        Example : In Brazil the Iphone 7 A1778 and the iPhone 7 Plus A1784 have homologation from Anatel. So, Apple’s warranty works in Brazil for this models, even if I buy them in USA.

    We’re here in Japan and we spend a lot of time here so I’m tempted to buy us Japanese Iphone 7s since FeliCa is so convenient. But I worry about getting the phones serviced if something breaks while at home in Hawaii… the phone should work fine on Verizon correct?

    Thank you for the great article. I live in Turkey and my operator Turkcell is on LTE between 1800mhz and 2600mhz GSM. From your replies I understand that regarding unlocked iPhone 7 Plus, 1661 and 1784 both will work but 1661 will enable additional benefits when roaming on CDMA networks including USA CDMA networks. Did I get you correct?

      You don’t need to activate it with a T-Mobile account. I replaced the SIM card and then I can use it anywhere in the world.

      Yes, the A1660 and A1661 are preferred because they use Qualcomm modem which covers more bands.
      Apple uses Intel modem on A1778 and A1784 because it is cheaper and they need another supplier.

      Yes,
      The Verizon is the best but it still lacks some LTE bands. If you live in Japan, I highly recommend you to buy iPhone 7 there.
      The sim-free version in the US doesn’t have FeliCa NFC.

Or if that won’t work well, buy just buy the Verizon for use in Japan later? I guess the lacking of LTE bands means it will work, just not as well?
