In my previous videos, I often use LED light panels when taking photos or videos of products. Unfortunately, they were dead after just over a year and after some research, I looked into a COB light. Chip-on-board (COB) LED lights and LED light panels represent two different approaches in lighting technology, with its unique advantages and disadvantages, especially in terms of light output. The NEEWER FS150B was on sale for just around $150 on Amazon and I decided to give it a try.
Design and Build Quality
The NEEWER FS150B’s exterior is made mostly out of metal, so it feels like a very durable product. It weighs less than 4 lbs, so it is quite convenient for location shoots and easy to handle. The light comes in a zippered, well-padded storage case, providing excellent protection and portability. Despite its compact size, the FS150B doesn’t compromise on build quality, making it a reliable tool for professionals and enthusiasts.
However, the power supply design lacks a dedicated attachment to the light stand, leading to potential clutter and tripping hazards on set. Since I set up the light pretty high with a C-stand, the power adapter would be dangling next to the stand; Therefore, I have to secure it with zip ties. Besides, the power plug is not grounded like other studio lights, which may raise concerns when there is a power surge. Having said that, it’s still an excellent step up from amateur lighting kits, providing professional features without the professional price tag.
Controls and Functionality
The FS150B has a user-friendly interface. The controls are intuitive, with physical knobs and buttons for adjusting color temperature, luminosity, and special effects. The addition of an FX mode, with adjustable effects like camera flashes, lightning, and explosions, adds versatility for shooting scripted media. For those who prefer modern convenience, the light offers Bluetooth connectivity for remote control via a mobile app, so you can save and recall presets for different purposes.
Lighting Performance
The NEEWER FS150B utilize a single, compact LED chip design that concentrates many LED chips on a small substrate, resulting in a high-intensity, focused light beam. It is powered by a 130-watt engine, delivering a significant amount of light for its size. It’s suitable for close-ups and punchy lighting setups. It offers a wide color temperature range from 2700K to 6500K and precise dimming control, making it adaptable to various shooting conditions. However, its brightness may be limited when diffused over large areas, making it less ideal as a key light in expansive settings. I use the light with a softbox and I’m totally satisfied with its performance. It is much brighter than my previous light panel, reduces shadows, and provides higher contrast.
Its design allows you to connect accessories like umbrella or softbox easily. It uses the standard Bowens mount, allowing the attachment of numerous light-shaping accessories. Besides, the inclusion of a hole for an umbrella in the mount is a thoughtful touch.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the NEEWER FS150B is a great COB video light and they have no competitor in the low price range. It balances performance, versatility, and user-friendliness. It offers significant value for its price, especially for content creators as long as they can accept the mess of power adapter on the stand.
