Xiaomi is trying to reach every corner of our house. They do not only create smartphones but also make appliances smarter. The latest smart Xiaomi product I’ve tested is the Mi Water Kettle.
What are the extra features the kettle is offering? Let’s find out.
Unboxing & Testing
Features & Performance
Following the minimalist design philosophy, the Mi kettle really proves less is more. It comes in an all white body with a metal ring on top. The ring is actually a part of the stainless steel tank inside. The double-layer thermal insulation will help keep the heat for a longer period of time.
The tank has the capacity of 1.5 liters, that means it could provide enough water for 1 person for a whole day. Boiling the full tank takes a little more than 4 minutes as you can see in the test above. The kettle will automatically turn off after the water is boiled.
There are 2 touch-capacitive buttons on the handle, the first one is to boil water and the second one is to keep the temperature at a preset degree. You can see that there is a thermal sensor on the bottom of the tank to measure the temperature. The kettle can keep the water at that temperature for up to 12 hours. Everything can be set up in the Mi Home app. There are some preset profiles, for instance, tea, coffee or baby formula. You can see the app in action in the video on top.
Using the kettle is pretty easy and you even don’t need to install the app. Just fill in water, place the kettle on its base, plug it into a power outlet, and press the Boil button. And you will have fresh hot water in a few minutes.
My only complaint is that the power cord is too short, it measures about 16 inches long. Obviously, you will need a cord extender or you need to place it pretty close to a power outlet.
I really appreciate that the kettle is designed with safety in mind. It doesn’t use mechanical buttons like on other products. There is only one button on top of the handrail to open the lid. Therefore, the chance of electric shock is minimized.
The Xiaomi Mi Electric Water Kettle is just a little more expensive than an ordinary kettle. The smart features are not convincing enough but you might just love it for its design and safety features. Besides, if you need to keep water hot throughout the day, this is absolutely a better choice.

Can you tell me if there is a problem if I let the Kettle plugged in but without water inside (no buttons pressed)?

The answer seems to be in the description which says:
Security Protection
It can automatically turn off electricity when the water is boiled out at all or when there is no water in it.
